Everything you need to know to plan your autumn family photography session in Melbourne

Autumn is one of those seasons that quickly comes around and then it leaves just as quick, leaving us in the middle of the cold and wet winter. With such a quick season it’s best to be prepared if you want to enjoy all the yellow and Orange tones of this season. The best months to plan your session is around March to be able to secure your date for April and May, just in time for when the leaves turn colours.

Things to consider to look your best in your next family autumn portrait session

There are a number of things to consider when planning your outfit for your next photography session. A few years ago I was planning for my own photography session and I found that the best way was to start with me. I am probably the most difficult one to please and to feel comfortable on the other side of the lens, so once you have chosen your outfit everyone else will fall into place. There are a number of other things you should consider so head over to our blog post to find out more details on this topic.

My favourite portrait locations in Bayside to make the most of the Autumn colours.

  • Landcox Park

  • Caulfield Park

  • Braeside Park

  • Basterfield Park

  • Mentone Racecourse

  • Fawkner Park

Things you should know about Family photography in autumn

10 Must have portraits of your family this autumn.

During your family photography session there will be a number of opportunities to get a variety of images including close up and pull backs of all the members of your family as well as individual. Here are some images that I feel will go very well together when displaying your images in your wall or a family album. Here are are my favourite:

  • Everyone looking at the camera (this traditional image is very popular with grandparents)

  • Siblings by themselves

  • Only the parents

  • Family from above

  • Family looking at each other

  • Family doing something like walking or running together

  • A close up of parent and child

  • A detail like hands together

  • The kids with each parent

  • Your pet and the family all together

How to display the images of your family photography session at home.

We have done all the hard work and scheduled and done your session, now it’s time for you to remember to download your images, back them up and make sure that your images are displayed for everyone to admire and remember the good times. Here are a few ways you can display your images:

  • Choose your hero image and display in a large canvas

  • Create a gallery wall with a variety of images that have different sizes but same frame

  • Create a collage using images of your session and print in a large format

  • Frame your images and use a ledge or shelf for your frames to stand

  • Print your images and use a metal string with magnets to display

  • Create a gallery wall using the same printing technique (wooden prints for example) but different shapes (square, round and rectangle)

  • Frame in pairs

  • Create a photobook that you can keep in your coffee table.
